In order to qualify for certification, an applicant must have completed a training or experience requirement. For the training program option, applicants must have completed an ACLAM-recognized formal laboratory animal training program of at least 2 years duration following receipt of the veterinary medical degree.
Applicant selection for most laboratory animal/comparative medicine training program positions is managed using the matching program administered by the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians (AAVC/VIRMP). Details on the matching process are described in detail on the VIRMP site (www.virmp.org). Additional details regarding the VIRMP application process and dates specific to laboratory animal/comparative medicine training programs can be found on the ASLAP Career Development webpage (https://www.aslap.org/career-development).
Important Note: Compared with other internship and residency programs also managed by the VIRMP site, the application deadline is typically 4 weeks earlier (~mid-December) for laboratory animal/comparative medicine training programs to allow programs to conduct interviews before applicant rankings are due (~mid-February). Applicants should contact their references and registrar to ensure they submit their letters of support and transcripts ahead of the mid-December deadline.
