ACLAM – ASLAP Joint Initiatives
Veterinary School Luncheon Series
ASLAP and ACLAM work together each year to provide a lecture or round table discussion focused on careers in laboratory animal medicine. Generally ACLAM covers the cost of food for these events. The goal of this program is to have an event at each veterinary school in the United States and Canada one time every 3 years. Since 2006, this program has supported events at Ontario Veterinary College, Purdue University, Oregon State University, Tufts University, University of Saskatchewan, University of Tennessee, University of Wisconsin, Virginia Tech University of Maryland, University of Prince Edward Island and others. These programs rely heavily on the ASLAP Student Liaisons to facilitate setting up these programs. For information or to volunteer please contact Alan Brady: agbrady@mdanderson.org

MENTORING PROGRAM
ACLAM’s Mentoring Committee is committed to implementing and sustaining a mentoring program. The overall program objective is to recruit veterinarians into laboratory animal medicine as a means of addressing the national shortage of laboratory animal veterinarians needed in Biomedical Research with a secondary objective of providing guidance and support to those already within the laboratory animal medicine specialty.
There are three target populations:
1) Veterinarians and veterinary students interested in opportunities in laboratory animal medicine [career change]. See Resources for veterinary practitioners [PDF 47KB] or Resources for veterinary students [PDF 42KB]
2) Veterinarians in the process of preparing to seek ACLAM certification [ACLAM board prep]. See Resources for ACLAM Board Preparation [PDF 61KB] or List of References [PDF 46KB]
3) Veterinarians in laboratory animal medicine seeking guidance on career building and professional development within this field [career/professional development]. See Resources for Professional Development [PDF 43KB]
The program will function as follows:
- A listserv will be established to facilitate communication among the participants.
- Mentors and mentees will apply, describing their qualifications and objectives.
- Applications will be reviewed by a coordinating committee and mentees will be matched with appropriate mentors.
- Mentoring coordinators will facilitate introductions between mentees and mentors as well as provide support as needed for mentee/mentor interactions.
- The Mentoring Coordinator will do a follow-up review of Mentor/Mentee pairs at least once every 3 to 6 months
- If any difficulties/awkwardness cannot be worked out between mentor/mentee such that either party finds that the match is not working, he/she should not hesitate to contact the Mentoring Committee (or Mentoring Coordinators) for a reassignment.
- Feedback will be solicited to support continuous improvement in the program.
