Training in Comparative Laboratory Animal Medicine

The Colorado State University, Laboratory Animal Resources, in conjunction with the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology, in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, is offering a post-DVM graduate training position in comparative animal medicine. The core program includes residency training in laboratory animal medicine and graduate research, and is designed to culminate in both American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certification eligibility, and an MS or PhD degree. Clinical and didactic training will be performed at CSU in conjunction with combined post-doctoral training programs in veterinary pathology and microbiology. Residency training is facilitated by a diverse and well established program for animal care and use at AAALAC-intl accredited facilities. Graduate research training utilizes modern scientific methodology and encourages independent thought with an emphasis on experimental design, data interpretation, and development of written and oral communication skills. Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree prior to initiation of the program. CSU participates in the Uniform Application Program (UAP, see www.aslap.com). Comparative Medicine Group Director and Attending Veterinarian

Kansas State University is seeking an individual for the position of Director, Comparative Medicine Group (CMG) and Attending Veterinarian.  The Director will administer a central animal care and use unit / program to provide high quality service for teaching and research faculty and will oversee the health and welfare for a diverse range of laboratory animal species including biomedical, agricultural, wildlife, and aquatic animals.  Animal care and use infrastructure includes eight separate animal facilities, including the Biosecurity Research Institute (BRI), a state-of-the-art food animal and biomedical infectious disease research facility containing biosafety level 3 and biosafety level 3Ag capabilities.

Candidates must have a DVM/VMD from an AVMA accredited college and ACLAM board certification or board eligibility with administrative experience in a full service animal care and use program.  Experience administering comprehensive or university-wide animal care and use programs at land-grant universities and experience in biocontainment facilities is desirable. The Center of Comparative Medicine and Pathology (CCMP), serving both the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Weill Cornell Medical College is seeking a laboratory animal specialist. Responsibilities include provision of clinical care to laboratory animals; overseeing animal health monitoring, quarantine, importation and surgical programs; IACUC membership and associated activities; and participating with other CCMP professional and senior management staff in programmatic development initiatives, education programs and postdoctoral training in laboratory animal medicine and pathology. Collaborative and/or independent research is supported.

CCMP is responsible for the care of over 200,000 animals daily, housed in eight facilities in Manhattan, Queens and Westchester County. Programs are centrally managed, AAALAC accredited, and supported by a multi-disciplinary diagnostic laboratory. CCMP has a staff of more than 150, including 7 veterinarians (both ACLAM and ACVP board certified). Candidates must possess a DVM/VMD from an AVMA accredited institution; have completed postdoctoral training in laboratory animal medicine or have four years of related experience; and be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state. ACLAM board eligibility or certification is highly desirable. Individuals board certified in other specialties, e.g., internal medicine, surgery, anesthesia, or zoological medicine, with a strong interest in laboratory animal medicine are also encouraged to apply.
